KMC to Intensify Dengue Drives After Monsoon Season

Kolkata: In response to seasonal health concerns, Kolkata’s Mayor has directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to intensify its vector control efforts as the monsoon season concludes. The Mayor’s appeal comes in light of the expected rise in mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria during the post-monsoon period.

Recent reports from KMC indicate a significant 53 per cent reduction in dengue and malaria cases compared to the previous year. However, the Mayor emphasised that this decline should not result in complacency. “While current data reflects a positive trend, our vigilance must increase during the post-monsoon period, which historically witnesses a surge in cases,” stated the Mayor. The emphasis is on identifying and addressing potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, particularly stagnant water on rooftops and in other neglected areas. Despite the decrease in current case numbers, the Mayor highlighted the need for rigorous preventive measures. “Post-monsoon is crucial for assessing and mitigating mosquito breeding sites. We must ensure there is no water accumulation, which is a primary factor in the proliferation of mosquito larvae,” he added.

Additionally, the Mayor voiced concerns about improper waste disposal contributing to the problem. He urged residents to use designated bins instead of littering, especially in public areas such as parks. The civic body has also been grappling with issues related to vacant and abandoned plots, which are increasingly becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The Mayor noted that efforts are underway to clean these sites and recover associated costs from property owners. Notices are being issued to prompt landowners to maintain cleanliness on their properties.
