MMRDA’s Mega Metro Project Current Status

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing one of the most ambitious urban transit projects globally, with a sprawling network of 14 Metro rail lines set to cover 337.1 kilometres across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This extensive project is being implemented in phases, with significant progress achieved in several key areas.

As of now, three Metro lines, spanning 46.5 km, are operational. These lines form the initial phase of a larger network designed to alleviate congestion on Mumbai’s local trains and roadways, offering residents seamless connectivity between Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. The MMRDA’s metropolitan commissioner highlighted that this development is set to transform urban mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance the overall quality of life for MMR’s citizens.

Currently, the Yellow Line 2B, stretching 23.6 km between D N Nagar (Andheri) and Mandale (Mankhurd), is 63% complete. Progress includes advancing civil work and architectural finishes, with a partial opening expected from Mandale to Chembur. Similarly, the Green Line 4, which extends 32.3 km from Wadala to Thane (Kasarvadavli), is 70.13% complete, with significant work ongoing between Mulund fire station and Gaimukh. The Green Line 4A, a shorter stretch of 2.7 km between Kasarvadavli and Gaimukh, is 74.58% complete.

Work on the Orange Line 5, covering 24.9 km from Thane to Bhiwandi-Kalyan, is advancing, with Phase I reaching 89.9% completion. The Pink Line 6, running 14.5 km from Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli, is 75.7% complete, and the Red Line 9, extending from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander, is 86.4% complete. The Red Line 7A, linking Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, is 37% complete, while the 20.7-km Line 12 between Kalyan and Taloja has also begun.

Planned extensions include the Green Line 10, which will connect Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road), and the southward extension of Green Line 11 from Wadala to SP Mukherjee Chowk (Museum). The detailed project report (DPR) for the 35-km Gold Line 8 and the 23-km Purple Line from Shivaji Chowk to Virar is in progress, with CIDCO and Milan Metro respectively overseeing these developments.
