PMC Clears Debris and Sewage from KNH Basement

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced the cleanup of debris and stagnant sewage water from the basement of Kamala Nehru Hospital (KNH). This action, which began on Monday, comes after persistent complaints and follow-ups from the hospital administration over the past two months.

The KNH administration had repeatedly requested the Bhavan Vibhag and Electrical Department to address the deteriorating conditions in the hospital’s basement. The situation had escalated due to ongoing renovations in some wards, where construction debris was improperly disposed of in the basement. Compounding the issue, the hospital’s sewage line has been plagued with frequent blockages, leading to significant accumulation of wastewater in the area.

The medical superintendent of KNH had formally raised the issue with the PMC in June, with follow-up letters sent in July and early August. Despite these requests, action was delayed until media coverage and public pressure prompted a response from civic officials. Reports highlighting the unhygienic conditions at KNH, notably a media article titled “Kamala Nehru Hospital Stinks of Civic Apathy,” and concerns raised by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists, accelerated the cleanup process.

On August 11, KNH’s basement was finally cleared of debris and sewage water. Dr. [Name] from KNH confirmed that, while most of the debris has been removed, a small portion remains to be cleared by the Bhavan department. Additionally, the faulty sewage lines have been repaired, and the basement has been thoroughly cleaned. “The accumulation of sewage water posed a significant health hazard to both patients and visitors,” said Dr. [Name]. “We had received numerous complaints about the foul smell and unsanitary conditions.” This remediation effort underscores the importance of timely municipal responses to infrastructure issues in healthcare facilities, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for patients and staff.
