KMDA Plans Bridge Maintenance Overhaul in North Kolkata

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is set to appoint a firm to manage the maintenance and structural restoration of seven crucial bridges across north Kolkata. This initiative, expected to span five months, aims to ensure the safety and functionality of these vital transportation links.

The bridges in question include the Chitpore Bridge over the Circular Canal, the Old Durgapur Bridge connecting Ultadanga with VIP Road over the Kestopur Canal, the Salt Lake Slip Bridge over the Kestopur Canal, the Chaulpatty Bridge over the Beliaghata Canal, the Ultadanga Steel Foot Bridge over Beliaghata Khal, the Maniktala Steel Bridge over the Town Head Cut Canal, and the Bagmari Bridge over the Circular Canal in Maniktala.

The chosen agency will be tasked with frequent inspections and ongoing maintenance to address any immediate concerns. The KMDA has stipulated that failure to perform these duties adequately will result in penal consequences for the agency. This proactive approach reflects the authority’s commitment to maintaining infrastructural integrity and preventing potential hazards. In addition to the bridge maintenance, the KMDA is also addressing other critical infrastructure issues. Plans are underway to undertake comprehensive maintenance of the Maa Flyover, which will include resurfacing the carriageway and carrying out urgent repairs to the Sealdah Flyover. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve the overall condition and safety of Kolkata’s transportation network.

This initiative underscores the KMDA’s dedication to enhancing urban infrastructure and ensuring that key transportation routes remain safe and efficient. By engaging a specialised agency for these tasks, the authority aims to streamline maintenance operations and address structural issues in a timely manner, thereby mitigating the risk of accidents and ensuring smoother traffic flow across the city.
