Metro 3 Phase 1 Set for September Launch amid delays

Mumbai’s eagerly anticipated Metro 3 project, a vital underground line connecting the city’s southern, central, and northern stretches, is set to commence partial operations by September.

Phase 1 of this metro line, linking the bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey, will mark a significant milestone in the city’s public transportation landscape, despite delays that have pushed back its original timeline. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), the authority spearheading the project, has confirmed this revised schedule, with Phase 1 now slated for commissioning in mid-September. The delay has been attributed primarily to outstanding mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) works, particularly in stations with complex construction dynamics, such as those near the city’s airport.

Phase 1 comprises three crucial packages, including Package 5, 6, and 7, covering SEEPZ, MIDC, and Marol stations. However, substantial work remains unfinished, especially within Package 6, which encompasses the strategically significant Sahar, T1, and T2 stations. The Sahar Road station is currently in its final stages, with work focusing on completing the ancillary building that includes entry and exit points. Meanwhile, at T1 station, the delay stems from complications associated with Mumbai International Airport Limited’s (MIAL) commercial development plans.

These unforeseen challenges necessitated deeper construction for the stations, complicating logistics and pushing back the timeline. Despite these hurdles, MMRC is pressing forward with key processes such as escalator testing and ensuring comprehensive safety measures are in place. A rigorous safety review will be conducted across all stations, examining essential commuter infrastructure like lifts, escalators, and staircases. This will pave the way for the submission of a proposal to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for the final certification required to commence operations.

The MMRC’s Managing Director has indicated that while Phase 1 is on track for a September launch, the complete Metro 3 line, stretching from BKC to Cuffe Parade, faces further challenges. Notably, construction at Girgaon and Kalbadevi stations continues to be a significant bottleneck. The final phase, extending to Cuffe Parade, is now expected to be fully operational by mid-next year, with a likely launch window between March and June 2024. While the revised timelines reflect the challenges faced, the gradual operationalisation of Metro 3 promises to alleviate some of the city’s chronic traffic woes, offering a faster and more efficient alternative for Mumbai’s commuters.
