Water Quality Issues Prompt BMC Intervention

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner has directed the Hydraulic Department to swiftly address and resolve issues related to water supply and quality throughout Mumbai.

This directive follows numerous complaints of low water pressure from various city areas, despite the water levels in the city’s reservoirs reaching a notable 93% capacity. The complaints have emerged from a diverse range of locations, including TJ Road, Jerbai Wadia Road, GD Ambekar Road, Bhoiwada; Joglekar Wadi in Matunga; Century Mill MHADA compound and Delisle Road in Lower Parel; Khar Danda, Appa Pada, and Kranti Nagar in Bandra East; as well as Dindoshi and Rajendra Nagar in Borivali. Residents from these areas have reported issues with water supply, despite the ample reservoir levels suggesting a potential disconnect between water availability and distribution.

In a press release, the BMC highlighted that road construction and other urban development projects occasionally result in damage to water pipelines, which can adversely impact water supply in affected areas. To mitigate these issues, the BMC has instructed officials to promptly identify and repair any leaks and to address other contributing factors such as increased water extraction and the use of illegal motor pumps. The Hydraulic Department has been tasked with overseeing water valve operations to ensure equitable distribution according to allocated quotas.

BMC has called for the seizure of illegal motor pumps and disconnection of unauthorised power lines. Citizens experiencing water supply issues are advised to contact the BMC’s helpline at 1916 for assistance.
