Crane falls onto building during metro construction

A colossal crane involved in the Surat metro project collapsed onto a residential bungalow in the Yamunanagar 2 society of Nana Varachha on Thursday evening. The incident, which unfolded near Tapovan Circle within the jurisdiction of Sarthana police station, has raised serious concerns about safety measures at metro construction sites.

The collapse occurred during a girder launching operation. Workers were in the midst of erecting a segment with the aid of two cranes when one crane became unbalanced. This imbalance caused the segment to fall, dragging the crane along and crashing it onto the adjacent bungalow. Fortunately, the bungalow was unoccupied at the time of the accident, mitigating potential casualties. Emergency services were quickly mobilised, with fire brigades from Sarthana, Kapodra, and Mota Varachha dispatched to the scene. The crane operator, who sustained injuries, was promptly taken to hospital for treatment. The rapid response of emergency teams helped manage the situation effectively, though the accident underscores critical safety concerns in high-stakes construction environments.

This incident marks the second major accident in a short span, with a previous occurrence on July 30 when a concrete girder of an under-construction metro bridge developed a fissure, leading to significant traffic disruptions and a show-cause notice issued to the contractor by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation. The recent series of accidents highlights the need for stringent safety protocols and thorough oversight in metro construction projects. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation and associated contractors will likely face increased scrutiny as authorities seek to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of both workers and the public.
