New Vistadome Coaches Cut Shimla Journey Time

A recent trial run of a train featuring panoramic Vistadome coaches achieved a speed of 25 km/h on the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track. This trial, conducted by joint teams from the railway department, marks a pivotal step towards enhancing passenger experience on this historic route.

The trial train, which comprised seven coaches, embarked on its journey from Kalka at 10:37 AM and arrived in Shimla at 2:25 PM. The successful test follows an earlier trial at a lower speed of 22 km/h. Ambala Divisional Railway Manager Mandeep Singh Bhatia confirmed that future trials will test speeds up to 28 km/h, with the aim of significantly reducing travel time. Currently, the journey from Kalka to Shimla spans between 5 to 6.5 hours. The new trials, if successful, could cut this duration to approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes, offering a faster and more comfortable option for passengers.

The Vistadome coaches, crafted by the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, are a leap forward in rail travel. Designed with expansive panoramic windows that extend to the roof, these coaches are set to provide an unparalleled viewing experience. In addition to their scenic advantages, the coaches feature advanced amenities including soundproof air conditioning with a reverse cycle system. This system allows for both cooling and heating, ensuring comfort in various weather conditions. The new Vistadome coaches will be available in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned versions. The non-AC coaches will be equipped with linear fans designed for optimal airflow.

This modernisation aims to cater to a diverse range of passenger preferences and enhance overall travel quality. Upon completion of the trial procedures, the upgraded Vistadome trains are expected to offer a superior travel experience on the Kalka-Shimla route, merging historical charm with modern conveniences.
