The United States has approved a $52.8 million foreign military sale to India, focusing on advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the approval on Friday, detailing the potential sale of sonobuoys and associated equipment that will enhance India’s maritime defence.
The announcement coincided with a pivotal meeting between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon. Their discussions covered a broad spectrum of issues aimed at fortifying the strategic partnership between the two nations, including defence cooperation, regional security, and industrial collaboration. The proposed sale includes AN/SSQ-53G High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare (HAASW) sonobuoys, AN/SSQ-62F HAASW sonobuoys, and AN/SSQ-36 sonobuoys. In addition, it encompasses technical support, documentation, and related logistics and programme services.
This equipment will significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, particularly when deployed from its fleet of MH-60R helicopters, which were procured from the US to modernise India’s naval aviation. India had previously placed an order in 2020 for 24 Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky MH-60R multi-role helicopters, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by 2025. The introduction of this sophisticated equipment is expected to enhance India’s maritime surveillance and anti-submarine operational effectiveness.
The DSCA noted that the sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the US-India strategic partnership and bolstering regional stability in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. This sale is a reflection of the growing defence industrial cooperation between the two countries, formalised last year through a defence industrial cooperation roadmap. This roadmap aims to accelerate technology collaboration and co-production in critical areas such as air combat, land mobility, and the undersea domain.
Additionally, Singh and Austin’s meeting underscored the recent agreements to enhance defence cooperation, including the Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA) and a memorandum of agreement for liaison officers. These initiatives are designed to improve the supply chain resilience and interoperability between the US and Indian defence forces.
