India’s 13-Mile Sea Bridge A £1.6bn Game Changer

India has once again demonstrated its engineering prowess with the completion of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, a monumental bridge that has significantly altered the connectivity landscape between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Officially known as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, this £1.6 billion marvel of modern engineering stretches across 13.5 miles (21.8 km) and is poised to become a lifeline for the nearly 22 million residents of these two bustling cities. The Atal Setu, Inaugurated in January 2024 after six years of rigorous construction, stands as the longest sea bridge in India and the 12th longest globally. It connects the economic powerhouse of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, a rapidly developing city across Thane Creek. The bridge’s six-lane highway has the capacity to accommodate 70,000 vehicles daily, significantly easing the region’s notorious traffic congestion.

Historically, the existing bridges over Thane Creek, though numerous, were ill-equipped to handle the exponential increase in traffic since the 1990s. Frequent traffic jams, accidents, and lengthy commute times had become the norm, hampering economic activity and the daily lives of millions. The introduction of the Atal Setu has dramatically changed this scenario, reducing the average commute time between the two cities from a grueling 90 minutes to a mere 20 minutes, thereby promising to revitalise economic and social interactions across the region.

Constructed at a staggering cost of ₹17,843 crore (approximately £1.6 billion), the Atal Setu not only serves as a critical infrastructure project but also as a symbol of India’s growing capabilities in large-scale engineering. The bridge, named after the late Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, embodies the spirit of progress and the nation’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure. Beyond its immediate benefits in terms of traffic decongestion and reduced travel time, the Atal Setu is expected to have far-reaching economic impacts.

By improving connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the bridge is likely to attract more investment into the region, stimulate real estate growth, and enhance the overall quality of life for millions. Additionally, the bridge plays a crucial role in integrating Navi Mumbai’s new airport, which is expected to further boost the region’s economic prospects. The Atal Setu’s inauguration is a landmark event in India’s infrastructure development story, representing both the technical capabilities and the ambitious vision required to meet the challenges of modern urbanisation. As the world watches, this 13.5-mile bridge will likely serve as a blueprint for future mega infrastructure projects, not just in India but globally.
