Indian Railways is embarking on an ambitious green drive, incorporating nuclear power into its energy mix to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and bolster its renewable energy portfolio. As part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, the Railways is exploring a multifaceted approach to energy production, with nuclear power playing a pivotal role.
With a target of attaining 30,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2029-30, Indian Railways is diversifying its energy sources. In addition to nuclear power, the Railways is actively advancing projects involving solar, wind, and hydel power. The focus is on establishing captive power generating units, allowing the Railways to control production and potentially reduce costs.
Senior officials revealed that discussions with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) are imminent to facilitate the integration of small-scale nuclear reactors. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply. Concurrently, the Railways is negotiating with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), NTPC, and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to secure renewable energy partnerships. The shift towards nuclear power is expected to address the Railways’ substantial energy demands, given its status as the largest electricity consumer in India. The Railways currently spends approximately ₹20,000 crore annually on energy for operations, including trains and office facilities. By transitioning to a mix of renewable and nuclear sources, the Railways aims to reduce operating costs and enhance energy efficiency.
The integration of nuclear power aligns with the Railways’ broader sustainability goals and is anticipated to play a significant role in meeting its ambitious carbon neutrality targets. As the Railways continues to explore and implement these energy solutions, the focus remains on balancing environmental responsibility with operational efficiency.
