Water Supply Disruption in Hyderabad Amid Infrastructure Work

Residents in various parts of Hyderabad are set to experience a temporary disruption in their drinking water supply due to ongoing infrastructure projects by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Strategic Main Drainage Project (SMDP). The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has announced that the interruption is necessary to facilitate construction work on a box drain stretching from Gurram Cheruvu to Sunny Gardens.

The planned construction, which includes the diversion of a 450 mm diameter pipeline outlet from the Balapur reservoir, is scheduled to commence at 9 p.m. on Friday and continue until 9 p.m. on Saturday. This essential work is part of broader efforts to upgrade the city’s drainage infrastructure, aiming to improve water management and mitigate flooding in vulnerable areas. According to HMWS&SB officials, the areas likely to be affected during this period include several key residential and institutional zones under the Balapur reservoir limits. In Division 2B, the water supply will be suspended in Raja Narasimha Colony, Indira Nagar, Pisal Banda, Dargah Buranshahi, Ghazi-Millat, GM Chauni, Lalita Bagh, Upguda, DMRL, DLRL, Garrison Engineer-1 & 2, DRDO, Midhani, Owaisi Hospital, BDL, CRPF, and Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Additionally, residents in Divisions 2A and 10A will also experience water outages. These areas include Hasnabad, Khalandanagar, Santhosh Nagar Old and New Colony, the vicinity opposite Yadagiri Kaman, MIGH, HIGH, LIGH Colonies, Fahaba Masjid, Maruti Nagar, Pochamma Gadda, Hanuman Tailor Galli, Baba Nagar, Maqbool Nagar, GM Nagar, and Quadri Colony. The HMWS&SB has advised residents in the affected areas to make necessary preparations for water storage to manage during the supply suspension period. The HMWS&SB’s decision to proceed with these works underscores the critical importance of maintaining and upgrading urban infrastructure to support Hyderabad’s growing population. The construction of the box drain is expected to significantly enhance drainage capacity, particularly during the monsoon season, thereby reducing the risk of urban flooding.
