Kerala’s Fisheries Sector Boosted with ₹287 Crore Initiative
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for a significant expansion of Kerala’s fisheries sector, unveiling five major infrastructure projects valued at ₹287.22 crore. This initiative, part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), aims to bolster the state’s fisheries infrastructure and enhance its economic impact.
Among the announced projects, four are funded under PMMSY, totalling ₹126.22 crore. This includes the expansion of the Kasaragod fishing harbour with an investment of ₹70.53 crore, where the Central Government will contribute ₹42.30 crore. Additionally, the modernisation of three other harbours—Ponnani in Malappuram, Puthiyappa, and Koyilandy—will be carried out at a combined cost of ₹55.69 crore. The modernisation efforts are slated for completion within 18 months, promising improved operational efficiency and infrastructure capabilities.
In addition, a ₹161-crore project for developing the Arthunkal harbour in Alappuzha district has been launched, funded through the FIDF. Collectively, these projects are expected to generate over 1.47 lakh job opportunities, providing a substantial boost to local employment and economic activity. The Prime Minister’s unveiling of these project s aligns with broader goals of enhancing the fisheries sector’s infrastructure and supporting regional economic growth. This development marks a critical step in advancing Kerala’s maritime capabilities and reinforcing its position within the national fisheries framework.
