Green Walk Marks 15 Years, Urges Better Site Protection

Green Walk, a dedicated collective of nature and archaeology enthusiasts, has urged both Union and state governments to improve infrastructure and maintenance. Established in 2009, Green Walk initially focused on protecting Madurai’s vulnerable hillocks from the granite mafia. Over the years, the group has expanded its mission to include raising awareness about the endangered heritage sites around Madurai.

On Sunday, Green Walk marked its 15th anniversary with a commemorative walk near Yanaimalai, attracting over 300 participants. This milestone event underscored the collective’s ongoing commitment to preserving Madurai’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Muthu Krishnan, the founder of Green Walk, highlighted that the group is nearing its 200th green walk, yet remains concerned about the lack of formal protection for many lesser-known sites. Notably, hillocks like Melakuilkudi, which hold significant heritage value, are still at risk without adequate conservation measures.

Reflecting on the group’s journey, senior member K Suresh shared that the initiative began at Yanaimalai and has grown significantly over the years. The group’s efforts not only promote heritage and environmental awareness but also encourage healthy activities like walking and trekking. By bringing in experts such as archaeologists and environmentalists, Green Walk aims to inspire younger generations to appreciate and safeguard their cultural and natural heritage. The continued advocacy for improved infrastructure and protection at these sites is crucial for preserving Madurai’s invaluable heritage for future generations.
