Water Contamination Suspected as 300 Fall Ill in Greater Noida Society

Residents of Supertech Ecovillage 2 in Greater Noida faced a health scare as over 300 individuals, including 170 children, fell ill due to suspected water contamination. The incident has prompted the Greater Noida Authority to launch an investigation into the water supply system of the residential society, which houses around 3,500 people across 32 towers.

The alarm was first raised when multiple residents, primarily children, reported symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach pain on Sunday. By Tuesday, it was clear that the problem was widespread, with several children requiring hospitalisation. Health officials were quick to respond, sending medical teams from Bisrakh and the District Hospital of Gautam Buddha Nagar to the society. Eight children were admitted to Numed Hospital, while two were transferred to Yatharth Hospital in Noida.

The preliminary investigation points to the possibility of contaminated water being the culprit. A resident of the C2 tower revealed that the society’s water tanks had been cleaned recently, yet residents noticed dirty water soon after. Officials from the Greater Noida Authority have taken water samples for laboratory testing to confirm the source of contamination. They noted that while the Authority supplies water up to the society’s reservoir, the internal distribution and tank maintenance are the responsibility of the builder or the Apartment Owners Association (AOA). The Greater Noida Authority has emphasised that no immediate issues were found in the Authority’s water supply. However, the investigation continues, with further actions to be determined based on the results of the water tests. The incident has highlighted the crucial need for stringent quality checks and maintenance of water storage facilities in housing societies.
