KMDA Issues Second Call for EM Bypass-New Town Flyover Construction

Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has issued a second call for tenders to construct the much-anticipated seven-kilometre flyover connecting EM Bypass to New Town. This move comes after the first tender call yielded only two responses, falling short of the minimum three required to proceed.

The KMDA’s decision to relaunch the tender is part of its strategy to ensure the engagement of a competent agency for this pivotal infrastructure project. The flyover is planned to be constructed under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, which will involve a comprehensive approach to project management and execution.

The proposed flyover will be a four-lane structure beginning near the Metropolitan Crossing, extending over Chingrighata, Salt Lake Bypass, and Sector V before crossing a small portion of wetlands and concluding at New Town near Mahisbathan. The design includes up and down ramps to connect Sector V, facilitating smoother traffic flow and reducing congestion in the area. Construction work for the flyover is anticipated to commence by the end of this year, following the finalisation of the tendering process. The project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between key commercial and residential areas in Kolkata, contributing to the region’s development and urban infrastructure.

The KMDA’s renewed effort to attract additional bids reflects its commitment to ensuring that the project is executed efficiently and meets the necessary standards. The successful bidder will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of the project, from detailed planning to construction and implementation.
