Kochi Water Metro Plans Increased Services for Onam Surge

Kochi Water Metro Ltd (KWML) is set to boost its services in response to anticipated increased demand during the Onam festival season. Currently, the Water Metro operates on six routes with an average daily ridership of approximately 3,000 passengers. With Onam drawing more tourists and locals, KWML is preparing to expand its offerings to accommodate the surge in passengers.

To manage the expected influx, KWML will increase the frequency of its electric-hybrid boats, which now number 16. The enhancements will initially focus on the High Court-Fort Kochi and High Court-Vypeen routes, aiming to better serve popular travel corridors during the busy period. In addition to the immediate service increase, KWML is also planning an expansion of its network later this year. By September, the Water Metro will introduce five new routes extending to Kumbalam, Paliyamthuruth, Willingdon Island, Kadamakkudy, and Mattancherry. This network expansion is expected to significantly improve connectivity across Kochi and its suburbs, providing residents and visitors with more comprehensive transport options.

The move to increase service frequency and expand routes underscores KWML’s commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure in the city. As Kochi continues to develop as a major tourist destination, these upgrades are anticipated to play a crucial role in easing travel congestion and supporting the city’s economic growth. The festive season’s impact on ridership and the planned network expansion reflect a proactive approach by KWML to address growing transportation needs and improve service efficiency. The expanded services and new routes are expected to further bolster the city’s public transport capabilities, offering greater convenience and accessibility to all passengers.
