Mumbai’s ambitious road infrastructure overhaul is set to commence on October 1, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) accelerates its comprehensive Rs 6,000 crore road concretisation project.
This extensive urban development initiative is poised to transform the city’s transport network, with Phase 1 targeting 397 kilometres of road upgrades. Scheduled for completion by May 2025, this phase is critical to the BMC’s broader vision of enhancing Mumbai’s road conditions and alleviating long-standing traffic woes. A recent meeting, led by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), directed the civic road department to expedite the commencement of concreting work and align with utility service departments to avoid potential delays. The focus on cross-departmental coordination underscores the BMC’s strategic approach to mitigating typical project hindrances.
Phase 1 of the road concretisation project is divided into two segments. The first covers 394 kilometres, while Phase 2, which is also set to begin in October, will focus on 309 kilometres, including key roads in the island city. Currently, the BMC has achieved approximately 30% completion of Phase 1, excluding work in the island city, which will begin with the issuance of five new work orders. The timeline for Phase 1 is tightly set, with a completion target of 240 days, from October 2024 to May 2025. This ambitious schedule reflects the city’s urgent need to upgrade its road infrastructure. The BMC aims to maintain a completion window of 30 to 45 days for each road patch, including excavation. The focus will remain on finishing incomplete roads before commencing new segments, ensuring a streamlined approach and efficient resource allocation.
Covering nearly 701 kilometres across Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs and the island city, the BMC’s road concreting initiative represents a significant leap in urban infrastructure investment. During a strategic meeting, engineers were urged to prepare detailed monthly schedules to track progress and ensure timely completion. As Mumbai’s population continues to grow, the BMC’s road concretisation project is a pivotal step in accommodating the city’s evolving transport needs.
