Central Railway Increases Porter Rates New Charges Effective Now

The Central Railway has announced an immediate revision in porterage charges across all railway stations, marking a significant change in the cost structure for baggage handling services. This rate hike, directed by the Railway Board, introduces a new pricing system based on the size and category of the station and is applicable for luggage up to 40 kg per trip. Porters, who assist passengers with their baggage, are a common sight at railway stations.

They can be identified by their distinctive red shirts and arm badges, which display their official license numbers. Each station typically has a rate chart displayed for these services, ensuring transparency for passengers. In Mumbai, the increased charges affect several major stations including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Dadar, Thane, and Kalyan. For example, at Dadar station, transporting luggage between the Central and Western Railway platforms now incurs a fee of INR 85, provided the service is rendered within a 30-minute window.

The new rates are designed to streamline the porter service operation and align the charges with current operational costs. This change is anticipated to impact both frequent travellers and occasional passengers who rely on porter services for ease of handling their luggage. The revised rates are part of the Central Railway’s broader strategy to enhance service efficiency and maintain a balance between cost and service quality. Passengers are encouraged to check the updated rates at their respective stations to ensure they are informed of the new charges.
