Human Health, Decarbonisation Key Drivers for Green Buildings

The importance of Green building practices has become increasingly evident in addressing climate change, improving efficiency and creating healthier spaces. In a recent industry poll conducted by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), over 500 responses from Green building professionals shed light on current issues and priorities within the field. The survey highlighted the significance of human health, decarbonisation, net-zero initiatives, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations as the primary drivers for Green building activity. However, challenges such as funding limitations and lack of knowledge were identified as barriers to implementing sustainable practices and projects.

Among the challenges faced by the Green building community, two significant barriers were noted: lack of funding and lack of knowledge. These barriers often impede the implementation of Green building practices and projects. However, the public expressed a strong commitment to sustainability, considering it a core part of their mission and a crucial component of their business strategy. Many viewed sustainability as a market differentiator and a competitive advantage.

The building owners, tenants and policymakers are increasingly prioritising efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, improve occupants’ health, and enhance the resilience of buildings in the face of extreme weather events. These findings highlight the growing awareness and demand for sustainable building solutions that address both environmental and human needs. By understanding the trends shaping the industry, stakeholders can work together to promote the adoption of Green building practices and drive the transition towards a more sustainable future.
