ASM Seeks National Importance Status to Avoid Closure

The venerable Asiatic Society of Mumbai (ASM), a cornerstone of the city’s cultural heritage, is grappling with a dire financial crisis that could lead to its closure. To avert this fate, members have proposed a bold move seeking the status of an “institute of national importance” from the central government.

Founded in 1804, the ASM has been a vital hub for intellectual discourse and research for centuries. However, the institution has been struggling financially for several years, with dwindling resources and a growing deficit. Despite efforts to mitigate the crisis, the situation has continued to deteriorate, culminating in a stark warning from the ASM president without substantial grants, the institution may be forced to close its doors. In light of this alarming prospect, members have proposed a resolution to seek the government’s intervention.

By securing the status of an institute of national importance, the ASM could potentially receive increased funding and support, ensuring its survival for generations to come. The resolution, put forward by Pulind Samant and seconded by Manoj Kulkarni, highlights the ASM’s critical role in preserving India’s cultural heritage and promoting scholarly research. It argues that the institution’s closure would be a significant loss to the nation and calls for urgent action to address its financial plight. While the proposal has garnered support from many members, some have raised concerns about the inclusion of certain individuals on the list of proposed honorary fellows.

Notably, the inclusion a government official, has sparked debate due to his involvement in past controversies. The ASM’s financial crisis is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many cultural institutions in India. As the country continues to grow and develop, it is essential to prioritize the preservation of its rich heritage and support institutions like the ASM that play a vital role in shaping our collective identity.
