Caught by AI: How Bengaluru Is Cracking Down on Traffic Offenders

In an ambitious move to strengthen road safety, Bengaluru Traffic Police are rolling out an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) surveillance system across the city. The AI-powered cameras will now detect 13 different types of traffic violations, including overspeeding, mobile phone usage while driving, failure to wear helmets and seat belts, red light jumping, stop line violations, and triple riding on two-wheelers. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and address the persistent issue of traffic violations that plague the city.

In addition to the already monitored offences, the AI cameras will now cover six more categories of violations. These include illegal number plates, wrong-side driving, overloaded goods vehicles, damaged or broken mirrors, and illegal parking. Bengaluru police have installed 330 AI-driven cameras at 90 strategic junctions, operating around the clock to capture real-time traffic data and ensure swift penalisation. As the tech capital of India, the city’s traffic management system is expected to see a rise in the number of cases booked with this upgraded AI surveillance.

The use of AI in Bengaluru’s traffic management is not just a technological leap but also a significant step in addressing civic issues. In 2023 alone, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked 89.9 lakh cases and collected nearly ₹190 crore in fines. By automating traffic rule enforcement, the city is streamlining processes that not only hold violators accountable but also contribute to reducing congestion and ensuring safer roads. However, the growing surveillance also raises concerns about privacy and data security, which will need to be carefully managed as the system matures.
