AMC’s Diwali gift to Ahmedabad: Water security and energy innovation

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated comprehensive measures to ensure smooth celebrations during Diwali, focusing on uninterrupted drinking water supply across the city. This directive from the AMC standing committee seeks to prevent any disruptions during the festival season, particularly when civic demand surges. As part of the preparations, AMC employees will receive their salaries before the festive break, with additional bonuses for Class 4 workers, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to employee welfare during this high-demand period.

Beyond water supply management, the AMC has prioritised public health by mandating daily inspections of food establishments throughout the city during Diwali. The initiative aims to maintain food safety standards, ensuring that residents and visitors enjoy festivities without concerns over hygiene. Adding to the vibrancy of the celebrations, the city’s bridges and heritage monuments will be illuminated, offering residents a visually stunning backdrop as they enjoy the holiday.

Further enhancing civic infrastructure, the AMC has laid the foundation for key projects set to commence post-Diwali. The most notable includes the construction of smart schools in Ahmedabad’s eastern sector, reflecting the city’s focus on modernising education and fostering a tech-savvy future generation. In parallel, the city’s waste-to-energy initiative will become operational by November, processing 1,000 metric tonnes of waste daily and generating 360 MW of electricity—a pivotal step toward sustainability.

The waste-to-energy project underscores Ahmedabad’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions amidst urban growth. By turning waste into power, the city moves closer to a circular economy model, aligning with broader national efforts to address climate change and reduce carbon footprints. These initiatives demonstrate how urban planning and sustainability can go hand in hand, enhancing both civic amenities and environmental outcomes.
