Kiratpur-Manali Highway to Get 18 New Footbridges for Improved Pedestrian Safety

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility along the Kiratpur-Manali highway with the construction of 18 new foot overbridges (FOBs). This project, estimated to cost ₹14.60 crore, aims to serve the residents of Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu districts in Himachal Pradesh, addressing long-standing safety concerns among local communities.

In Bilaspur district, three FOBs will be built in the villages of Mora, Gara, and Ree. Mandi district will see the most significant investment, with ten bridges to be constructed in areas such as Naulakha, Kannaid, Bhour, Dadour, Jaral, Thalout, Aut, Takoli, and Nagwain, with two FOBs specifically allocated for Dadour. Kullu district will benefit from five new bridges located in Bhuin, near Bhoothnath Bridge, Ramshila, Katrain, and Bran villages. NHAI project director reported that construction has already commenced at several sites, with at least six underway. “These FOBs will not only facilitate safe crossings for residents and pedestrians, particularly during peak traffic hours but will also promote smoother traffic flow,” director explained. The NHAI has recognised the necessity of these structures, particularly in light of the increased traffic following the recent opening of the Kiratpur-Nerchowk section of the highway.

Since its inauguration on August 6 last year, the highway has experienced a surge in traffic, resulting in growing concerns over safety. Residents have consistently voiced their frustrations regarding the difficulty in crossing the highway, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. Many have struggled to access agricultural fields with their cattle, heightening the urgency for the FOBs. Moreover, the implementation of these foot overbridges is anticipated to significantly reduce the number of accidents, which have escalated due to the heightened traffic flow. An NHAI official noted, “The construction of FOBs is crucial for curbing the rising accident rate on the highway.” Sustainability considerations are also a vital aspect of this project. By improving pedestrian safety and reducing the likelihood of accidents, the NHAI is contributing to a more sustainable transport infrastructure. This initiative not only enhances the quality of life for local residents but also reflects a broader commitment to integrating safety and environmental stewardship in highway development.
