Delhi Okays 10-km Cycle Corridor to Promote Sustainable Transport

The Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC), the road engineering overseer, has given the green light to a 10-km-long cycle corridor planned by the New Delhi Municipal Council. The proposed cycle corridor will connect New Moti Bagh in South Delhi with Central Secretariat, and its route will include Nirman Bhawan, Shanti Path, Kautilya Marg, Teen Murti Marg and Sansad Marg. This new corridor is expected to become a model path, setting a trend for more such corridors, and is a significant step towards making Delhi a more cycle-friendly city and promoting sustainable transportation.

The UTTIPEC’s approval of the cycle corridor and other transit projects highlights the importance of investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure. The proposed cycle corridor was found to be ‘doable’ since it would face the fewest interventions. The governing body also approved several other traffic and transport infrastructure projects, including a comprehensive mobility plan for Dwarka, a traffic impact assessment report for the redevelopment of the AIIMS campus to convert it into a world-class medical university, and multimodal integration (MMI) of select Delhi Metro stations.

The Delhi government has been grappling with high levels of air pollution and traffic congestion, and initiatives like the cycle corridor and multimodal integration of select Delhi Metro stations are expected to help tackle these issues. The MMI of Delhi Metro stations will encourage more people to use public transportation, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution.
