Mumbai’s Metro Line-3 to Feature Island Platforms

Mumbai’s eagerly anticipated Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro Line-3, popularly known as Aqua Line, is set to revolutionise the city’s Metro system with introduction of island platforms. Departing from the traditional side platforms commonly found in most Metro lines, island platforms will be positioned between two tracks, offering a range of passenger amenities such as elevators, escalators, restrooms, waiting rooms and shops. This innovative design aims to enhance convenience for commuters.

By adopting island platforms, the Aqua Line will not only provide passengers with easier access to facilities but also reduce maintenance costs. Additionally, the island platform concept will help prevent overcrowding by utilising a single, spacious platform for trains traveling in both directions. This strategic move demonstrates a commitment to ensuring seamless transportation experiences for the city’s residents.

Stretching approximately 33.5 km, the Aqua Line will be Mumbai’s first underground Metro line and one of the longest continuous underground stretches in India. It is expected to connect various congested regions and major financial hubs, including Nariman Point, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Fort, Worli, Lower Parel and Goregaon. The line will feature 26 larger-than-normal stations, each encompassing approximately 20,000 sq mtr of space.

To accommodate eight coaches, the platforms will measure 180 mtr in length, while the stations themselves will span 250 mtr in length and 22 mtr in width. With an estimated daily ridership of around 17 lakh passengers, the Aqua Line promises to alleviate traffic congestion and offer a reliable mode of transportation for the city’s residents.

The first phase of the Aqua Line will span from BKC to Seepz. This ambitious project forms a crucial part of Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to enhance its public transportation infrastructure and address the challenges posed by increasing traffic congestion.
