Bandra Pipeline Burst Wastes Lakhs of Litres; Water Cuts Ahead

Mumbai residents in Central and South Mumbai may face a severe water crisis following a massive pipeline burst in Bandra on Tuesday. The dramatic event, captured on video and widely shared across social media, shows water gushing 50 feet into the air. Several locals were seen enjoying the unusual sight as water cascaded down near the site of the rupture.

The burst has led to the wastage of lakhs of litres of water, further exacerbating the city’s ongoing water supply issues. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to reach the site to address the situation, leaving residents uncertain about when the pipeline will be repaired. Currently, Mumbai is already grappling with a 10% water cut due to ongoing repairs at the pneumatic gate system at Pise, a critical water distribution hub. The BMC had previously announced these planned disruptions from December 1 to 5, affecting water supply across the city, including Thane and Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation areas. The Bandra pipeline burst adds to the challenges, likely intensifying the water scarcity in the coming days.

The exact cause of the pipeline rupture remains unclear. Officials are yet to determine the reasons or provide a timeline for repairs. However, the incident underscores the urgency of addressing Mumbai’s ageing water infrastructure to prevent further crises. With water gushing uncontrollably and no immediate action visible, Mumbaikars residing in Central and South Mumbai are advised to brace for extended shortages. The unplanned water loss compounds the city’s struggle to maintain adequate supply amidst essential maintenance work. As the situation unfolds, authorities will need to act swiftly to mitigate the impact and restore normalcy. Residents are urged to use water judiciously and prepare for potential disruptions in daily routines.
