Boundary Walls Turned Into Urination Spots at Pune Railway Station

The parcel section entrance of Pune Railway Station has become a focal point for unhygienic practices, with open defecation and urination creating unpleasant conditions for passengers. The Railway Department has lodged a formal complaint with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the growing issue.

Passengers, particularly those exiting the railway station or heading toward the bus station, have been found engaging in open defecation, contributing to a foul smell and unsanitary surroundings. In response to increasing complaints, especially from female passengers, Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Indu Dubey conducted an inspection and urged Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale to take immediate corrective measures.

Illegal Stalls Contributing to the Problem
The area around the station is busy, with numerous food and pan stalls along the boundary walls of the parking lot and parcel section. Many of these stalls have been abandoned and are now being used informally for urination. DRM Dubey emphasized that this has led to unsanitary conditions, with women passengers being particularly affected by the situation. “We have received an increasing number of complaints from women passengers about the unhygienic conditions,” said Dubey.

Health and Hygiene Concerns
The illegal stalls and misuse of public spaces for urination pose significant health risks, particularly given the high traffic in the area. “The continued unsanitary conditions and the foul smell can be hazardous to public health,” warned Dubey, urging PMC to act swiftly to mitigate the situation.

Availability of Free Toilets Yet Unused
Despite the availability of free public toilets outside the railway station, many individuals continue to relieve themselves at the boundary walls, exacerbating the problem. “Passengers and citizens are urged to use the designated facilities to prevent this unsanitary behavior, which causes embarrassment, especially for women,” Dubey appealed.

PMC’s Response Still Awaited
When contacted, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale declined to comment on the issue. However, DRM Dubey emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating that the installation of urinals along the boundary wall has not deterred the ongoing practice of public urination. As the situation persists, commuters and citizens are awaiting PMC’s intervention to restore hygiene and ensure a dignified environment at the station.
