Kanpur Metro Completes Track Construction to Kanpur Central, Preparing for 2025 Launch

The Kanpur Metro project has marked a major milestone, as it successfully completed the track construction on the ‘downline’ up to Kanpur Central, a key section of Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta). This marks significant progress in the city’s first metro rail project, which aims to revolutionize public transportation.

This achievement means that the metro route is now fully prepared on both lines from IIT to Kanpur Central, setting the stage for the upcoming launch of metro services. The completion of track work extends from the ramp area at McRobertganj to Nayaganj station and further from Nayaganj to Kanpur Central station. With these sections completed, UPMRC (Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation) is now focused on installing the third rail on the ‘downline,’ expected to be finished soon. The project is progressing steadily, with the construction of track slabs on the elevated Baradevi-Naubasta section also moving forward. UPMRC Managing Director, Sushil Kumar, conducted a visit to Kanpur, where he reviewed the progress on various underground stations and held a meeting with senior officials. The ongoing work across all departments, including the civil construction of stations, is being closely monitored to ensure that the project remains on track.

One of the notable features of the Kanpur Metro’s infrastructure is its use of ballast-less tracks, which improve track stability and reduce maintenance needs. Additionally, provisions have been made to install a third rail, along with derailment guards and a mass spring system. This system helps absorb vibrations and reduces noise, enhancing the overall passenger experience and minimizing environmental impact. The completion of this track segment is a crucial step toward the scheduled passenger services launch from IIT to Kanpur Central, which is expected to occur in January 2025. The metro will serve as a fast, efficient, and modern public transportation system for the city, offering relief to commuters and contributing to reduced traffic congestion. With ambitious goals in sight, Kanpur Metro continues to be a transformative project for the city’s future, promising to reshape urban mobility in the region.
