Yamuna in Delhi Continues to Suffer Heavy Pollution

Unabated Pollution Levels
The Yamuna River, flowing through Delhi, continues to face severe pollution despite multiple interventions over the years. Untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and the dumping of solid waste have significantly degraded water quality. Recent reports indicate high levels of ammonia and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), making the river water unfit for drinking, bathing, or agricultural use.

Key Pollutants and Sources
Approximately 70% of the pollution in the Yamuna stems from untreated wastewater from Delhi’s 18 major drains. Industrial discharges from neighbouring areas, such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, exacerbate the problem. Key hotspots like Wazirabad and Okhla have become cesspools of untreated effluents, contributing to the river’s deteriorating state.

Efforts and Challenges
The Delhi government has launched several initiatives under the Yamuna Action Plan (YAP), including setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) and intercepting drains before they reach the river. However, inadequate infrastructure, poor enforcement of environmental regulations, and rapid urbanisation continue to offset these efforts. Public participation in river cleaning drives has been sporadic and insufficient to bring about meaningful change.

Environmental and Public Health Impact
The pollution of the Yamuna poses severe health risks, with reports linking it to waterborne diseases and a decline in biodiversity. The contaminated river also affects groundwater quality and agricultural productivity in regions dependent on it for irrigation.
