Mission Olympics 2036 AMC Sets Sights on Sports Infrastructure Expansion

As Ahmedabad gears up for the possibility of hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, the city’s ambitions are rapidly materialising through the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) plan to establish world-class sports infrastructure. The project, aimed at developing large sports complexes in every city zone, is set to inject between Rs 200 crore and Rs 250 crore into the local economy, marking a significant investment in the city’s sporting future.

Five major complexes are set to be constructed in key areas such as Gota, Bopal, Ranip, Naroda, and Nikol, with each facility designed to cater to a wide range of sports and athletic activities. The Gota complex, for instance, will span 16,875 sq m and is expected to cost Rs 28.88 crore. It will feature various sports facilities including tennis courts, a swimming pool, badminton courts, basketball courts, and a mini handball court. These complexes are part of a larger vision to enhance the city’s sports infrastructure and provide accessible training facilities for athletes of all ages.

In addition to the five primary complexes, the AMC is also planning mini sports arenas in areas like Khadia, Shahibaug, and Vatva, designed to offer local residents access to facilities for sports like cricket, basketball, and badminton. The project’s progress is aligned with the city’s aspirations to not only foster local talent but also position itself as a competitive hub for international sporting events.

Meanwhile, AMC is simultaneously working on high-profile projects such as the Rs 583 crore sports complex in Naranpura, which will be spread across 20 acres and is set to become the largest in the city’s western zone. This complex will feature an athletics track, football fields, tennis courts, and multiple indoor sports facilities. Another major development in the city’s east zone is the Vastral sports complex, with a Rs 59 crore investment slated to provide a 25m by 20m athletics track, football ground, and several other courts for different sports.

These ambitious developments will not only lay the foundation for future Olympic aspirations but also drive the city towards achieving its sustainability goals by promoting healthier lifestyles, sports tourism, and community engagement.
