How Indian Railways is Expanding Coach Capacity to Meet Passenger Demand

Indian Railways is taking significant steps to enhance its services and ensure that the growing demand for train travel is met efficiently. The focus is on improving the capacity of coaches to cater to a broad range of passengers, with special attention to the economically weaker sections.

Indian Railways is carefully managing the allocation of non-AC and AC coaches to cater to passengers from different economic categories. The allocation ratio is set at 2:3 for non-AC coaches and 1:3 for AC coaches, ensuring a fair distribution that benefits all segments of society.

To address the increasing demand, Indian Railways has launched a special coach manufacturing program. Key highlights of this initiative include:

  • 1914 new coaches added in the current financial year, including:
    • 384 EMU coaches (Electric Multiple Units)
    • 185 MEMU coaches (Mainline Electric Multiple Units)
  • This expansion aims to benefit 72 lakh passengers, particularly in unreserved categories.

In line with the overall initiative, Western Railway has been instrumental in increasing capacity. Between July and December, it has introduced approximately 150 new general category coaches across 78 train pairs, which is helping to reduce overcrowding and improve comfort for thousands of daily passengers. These initiatives are crucial in meeting the growing demand for affordable and accessible rail travel, especially for economically weaker passengers. By increasing coach capacity, Indian Railways is ensuring a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for millions of people, reinforcing its position as the backbone of the nation’s transport system.
