PWD’s ₹1.99 crore AI project transforms road surveys in Latur

In a groundbreaking initiative, Maharashtra’s Public Works Department (PWD) is leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform road surveys in Latur, a move that sets a precedent for the state. The project, touted as the first of its kind, is being implemented in Udgir with funding of ₹1.99 crore allocated by the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC), according to PWD Executive Engineer Rohan Jadhav.

The initiative employs cutting-edge AI technology to conduct digital road surveys, offering comprehensive insights into road quality, traffic density, and sequential numbering. These data points aim to revolutionise construction and maintenance operations, enabling the PWD to address civic challenges more efficiently. Pune-based Rasta.Ai, a specialised firm in road maintenance and asset management, is spearheading this transformative effort, blending innovation with practical urban solutions.

This AI-led approach marks a paradigm shift in urban infrastructure management, focusing on sustainability and efficiency. By reducing manual intervention, the technology minimises errors, enhances precision, and promotes timely repairs, ensuring safer roads for commuters. Similar initiatives in other states have highlighted significant improvements in cost efficiency and project timelines, setting a benchmark for Maharashtra’s PWD to emulate.

From a sustainability perspective, such projects pave the way for resource optimisation and reduced environmental impact. AI systems facilitate targeted interventions, minimising wastage of materials and energy. By adopting such forward-thinking measures, Maharashtra demonstrates its commitment to smarter, greener urban development while addressing pressing civic issues such as deteriorating road conditions and traffic congestion.
