NTPC Limited has signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GRIDCO (the Odisha government’s energy undertaking) and CRUT (Capital Region Urban Transport), the state-run public transport agency, to set up green hydrogen infrastructure in Odisha. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions, particularly focusing on green hydrogen mobility.
As part of the agreement, NTPC will establish a green hydrogen fuelling station in Bhubaneswar, along with a fleet of hydrogen buses designed for both short-haul and long-haul operations. The introduction of hydrogen-powered buses is expected to significantly reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the public transport sector, contributing to a cleaner environment and greater energy security for the state.
Odisha’s government has shown strong support for this initiative, with the Minister of Energy highlighting that this project aligns with the state’s broader vision for clean and sustainable energy solutions. The Minister also expressed optimism about the potential of green hydrogen to create a robust and environmentally friendly public transport system in Odisha. The project is expected to foster a cleaner, greener future for Bhubaneswar, reducing air pollution and boosting decarbonization efforts across the state. NTPC has been operating a green hydrogen blending project in Surat for the past two years and has launched similar initiatives in Leh, Greater Noida, and Kandla in Gujarat. The company is also in the process of developing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam, with a target to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.
