Development of Third Mumbai to Kick Off with Surveys in Early 2025
Mumbai is set to embark on an ambitious project, with surveys to develop the Third Mumbai, a new town that will span across Raigad, scheduled to begin in early 2025. The project, officially named Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town (KSC New Town), is poised to transform the region into a vital tech hub, potentially hosting 65% of the nation’s data centres. By improving connectivity and reducing travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, KSC New Town aims to drive significant economic growth in the region.
The surveys, covering an area of 323.44 square kilometres across 124 villages, will initiate with aerial assessments and be followed by detailed studies using advanced Lidar technology. According to a senior official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), private firms will be invited to conduct both drone-based surveys and ground verification, gathering crucial land ownership data and preparing a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based map of the region. A key element of the project will be the creation of a comprehensive master plan for the new town. A private entity will be appointed to develop this vision document, which will include a detailed strategy for the town’s development. This plan is expected to be finalised by August 2026, with the initial survey phase expected to take around six to eight months to complete.
KSC New Town forms a central part of the Maharashtra government’s vision to elevate the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s GDP to USD 300 billion by 2029. This aligns with the broader objectives laid out by NITI Aayog, aiming for significant growth and economic expansion in India. The development plans for the region were initially introduced in 2013, and the recent partnership between the MMRDA and the World Economic Forum is expected to further drive this vision forward. As the surveys begin, the project is set to shape the future of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, positioning it as a hub for technological innovation and economic growth in the coming years.
