Re Sustainability (ReSL), Asia’s leading comprehensive environment management services, and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) inaugurated India’s most advanced and Kolkata’s first C&D waste recycling plant in New Town, Kolkata. This state-of-the-art facility, spread over five acres, has the capacity to recycle 1,600 tonne of construction and demolition waste per day, making it a critical development stimulus in the country’s C&D waste management efforts.
India currently recycles only 1 percent of its C&D waste, and Kolkata produces nearly 1,600 tonne of such waste daily, which remains uncollected and scattered throughout the city, according to a survey by KMC and Re Sustainability. However, with the launch of the C&D waste recycling plant, Kolkata’s waste management system is set to transform, reducing the environment impact, conserving landfill space, and meeting the construction industry’s demand for eco-friendly materials.
The INR 400 million projects is the latest addition to Re Sustainability’s series of recycling facilities across the country as part of its #CloseTheLoop initiative. The plant, established in a PPP between ReSL and KMC, would employ advanced wet technology for efficient sorting of C&D waste, crushing, washing and screening to obtain recycled sand and aggregate that can be used in mortar and concrete grade mixes. Additionally, the plant would produce pre-cast products such as bricks, pavers, tiles and kerbstones that can be used in construction, closing the loop in circularity in the construction industry.
The new recycling plant is set to revolutionise Kolkata’s waste management system and sustainable construction, driving circularity in the construction sector by transforming construction and demolition waste into recycled aggregates, bricks and tiles. The landfill of Dhapa, which has been drowning in the city’s waste for years, is set to become a thing of the past, bringing in strategic advantages for the city. Under the guidance of KMC, the plant will also engage with local community, NGOs, social enterprises and educational institutes to promote sustainable C&D waste management in the city.
The plant’s inauguration marks the beginning of a new era of sustainable waste management in Kolkata, bringing hope for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly city that can improve its sustainable image.
