Traffic Chaos on Key Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway Stretch

The 119 km Bengaluru-Mysuru highway has long been touted as a game-changer for travellers seeking faster access between the two cities. However, this promising corridor has an ugly truth for Bengaluru residents – the 15-kilometre stretch from Town Hall to the entry point near the Panchamukhi Ganesha temple is a nightmare for motorists. Despite the highway’s potential to significantly reduce travel time, poorly maintained roads, hazardous potholes, and chaotic junctions in this stretch continue to mar what could be an efficient road link.

Peak hours and weekends see this stretch turning into a bottleneck, with gridlocks becoming commonplace, especially after 6pm. Even seasoned commuters, such as Sahana R. who travels from RR Nagar to Mysuru every weekend, find themselves frustrated. “The holiday rush makes it unbearable. What’s the point of a highway when you’re stuck in traffic for hours just getting there?” she said. Motorists also face delays caused by several key choke points along the stretch. These include the Sri Balgangadharanatha Swamy flyover exit, which leads to erratic merging of vehicles, and the Bapuji Nagar toll gate signal, which exacerbates gridlock. Similarly, the Satellite Bus Stand junction and the Kengeri junction see heavy congestion due to the convergence of buses, autos, and private vehicles.

The root cause of these issues lies in poor road design, a sentiment echoed by Manish M, a resident of Vijayanagar. “Mysuru Road suddenly narrows after Kengeri and near the NICE Road junction, which leads to a significant bottleneck. This stretch should have been planned better,” he stated. The situation worsens during the festive season when travellers heading to popular destinations like Mysuru and Kodagu often find themselves stuck in traffic for hours before even reaching the toll booths.

From an environmental and sustainability perspective, the inefficiencies on this stretch of the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway come with significant consequences. The excessive fuel wastage, resulting from idling in traffic, contributes to higher emissions and a growing carbon footprint. This issue is not only inconvenient but also a setback to urban sustainability goals, as it increases air pollution levels and wastes valuable resources. The sheer volume of vehicles on this stretch also reduces the efficiency of the road, negating the very purpose of the highway – to reduce travel time and facilitate faster movement.

Urban experts and residents alike have called on authorities to address the persistent issues. Suggestions include resurfacing the road and fixing potholes to improve road quality, especially in areas that remain prone to frequent wear and tear. Moreover, the redesign of choke points such as the Challaghatta junction and the addition of flyovers or underpasses could relieve the congestion. Smart traffic management systems, along with better signage and increased enforcement, are also essential to prevent further traffic chaos. A dedicated elevated corridor from Town Hall to the highway toll is another suggestion that could ease traffic flow. Ultimately, ensuring smooth access to the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway would not only make the journey faster but also promote a more sustainable, eco-friendly approach to urban mobility.

This issue highlights the pressing need for integrated urban planning and timely infrastructure development. The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, with its potential to transform travel in the region, can become a symbol of modern infrastructure – but only if the foundational problems are addressed. Proper road design, maintenance, and sustainable traffic management practices must be prioritized to ensure that the highway lives up to its promise, benefiting both residents and the environment.
