Kochi Budget Prioritises Canal Restoration, Flood Control Projects

The annual budget of the Kochi Corporation has highlighted canal restoration and urban flood control projects, allocating a total of INR 90 crore in budgetary support. The budget aims to increase revenue collection while implementing austerity measures. To be carried out in collaboration with the Vector Control Research Centre in Puducherry, mosquito control operations will receive INR 20 crore in financial support, and the drinking water project will be allotted INR 60 crore. Strengthening the public transport system, public health projects and education and sports development are also key sectors that the civic body intends to invest significantly.

The budget emphasises the continuation of the e-governance program and allocates INR 10 crore for welfare projects targeting scheduled caste/scheduled tribes. Additionally, budgetary support has been allocated for conserving and protecting eco-parks, including Mangalavanam. Notably, the allocation of funds to divisions under the Division Fund category has been discontinued, and the budget document reintroduces the concept of processing waste at its source in relation to municipal solid waste.

The Kochi Corporation’s budget highlights its commitment to canal restoration, urban flood control projects, and various sectors such as public transportation, public health, education and sports development. The emphasis on mosquito control operations, drinking water projects and eco-park conservation showcases the civic body’s dedication to improving the city’s infrastructure.
