Re Sustainability (ReSL) and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have jointly inaugurated India’s most advanced and Kolkata’s first Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant in New Town, Kolkata. Spread across 5 acres, this state-of-the-art facility has a capacity of 1,600 tonnes per day and will transform C&D waste into recycled aggregates, bricks, and tiles. The plant will drive circularity in the construction sector and revolutionise Kolkata’s waste management system. The facility’s launch is a significant development stimulus in the country’s C&D waste management efforts.
The project, worth INR 400 million, is part of Re Sustainability’s #CloseTheLoop initiative, and is the latest addition to their series of recycling facilities nationwide. According to a report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), India recycles only 1 percent of its C&D waste. With six functional C&D facilities already in place, Re Sustainability strives to make this new recycling plant in Kolkata a crucial development in the country’s C&D waste management efforts.
The diverse and culturally rich city of Kolkata, with a strategic location as a corridor to the North-East, attracts FDIs and real estate investments, producing nearly 1,600 tonne of C&D waste daily. However, the vast majority of this waste is left uncollected and scattered throughout the city, according to a KMC and Re Sustainability survey. The landfill of Dhapa has been drowning in the city’s waste for years, but now, with the launch of the C&D waste recycling plant, a new era of sustainable waste management has begun.
The facility will stop chaotic and unregulated waste management processes, bringing strategic advantages such as reducing environmental impact, conserving landfill space, and meeting the construction industry’s demand for eco-friendly materials. As the city embraces upcoming advancements in waste management, it has the potential to improve its sustainable image and become a cleaner and more environmentally friendly place.
