Mumbai CM Pushes for 23 km of Metro Services Amid Car Shed Delays

Mumbai’s transport system is on the cusp of a significant upgrade as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis intensifies efforts to roll out 23 km of Metro services this year, despite facing challenges related to land acquisition for car sheds. During a high-level review meeting held at Sahyadri State Guest House, Fadnavis emphasised the need for swift action to overcome logistical hurdles impeding Metro projects.

The ongoing challenge is securing sufficient land for car sheds, which are critical to the operationalisation of the Metro network. Fadnavis, however, directed officials to explore temporary solutions to address the issue, while stressing the need for Mumbai to expand its Metro network by at least 50 km annually. The 23 km planned for completion in 2024 forms part of this ambitious strategy, with an additional 20 to 25 km of Metro-3 lines also slated for completion in the near future. Despite these challenges, the Chief Minister is determined to ensure that the Metro expansion stays on track. He has directed the authorities to identify and earmark land for future car sheds, recognising that delays in this area could set back the city’s public transport ambitions. The plan to roll out 23 km of Metro services is an integral component of Mumbai’s long-term vision to ease traffic congestion and improve commuting experiences for its residents.

In parallel, Mumbai’s wider transportation landscape is also seeing rapid developments. The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marked a significant milestone on 29 December 2024, with the successful landing of its first commercial flight. In response to this, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is accelerating its plans to connect NMIA with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) through an Airport Express Line Metro. This new line aims to enhance connectivity between the two airports, offering passengers a quick, convenient travel option that will significantly reduce travel time.

CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal confirmed that the 33-km Airport Express Line Metro is moving forward at a rapid pace, with the detailed project report (DPR) expected to be completed in the next three months. Once finalised, the tendering process will commence promptly, ensuring that the project is delivered without unnecessary delays. These developments in Mumbai’s Metro network and airport connectivity highlight a concerted effort to modernise the city’s transport infrastructure. As these ambitious projects move closer to completion, they promise to offer a more seamless, reliable, and efficient transport experience for both Mumbai’s residents and visitors.
