Delhi to Equip Waste Collection Vehicles with GPS Devices

The National Green Tribunal-appointed (NGT) high-level committee has issued an order to implement a pilot project in Delhi’s west zone and Dwarka areas to install GPS devices in waste collection vehicles. The committee, headed by Governor V K Saxena, convened its first meeting recently to monitor the management and disposal of municipal solid waste. The formation of the committee was mandated by NGT back in February.

The pilot project was decided to commence in the west zone, and Dwarka, where cleaning and waste collection operations begin at 5 am. The committee also agreed to augment the number of waste collection vehicles and equip them with GPS devices for monitoring purposes.

Another significant development was the progress made in biomining and disposal of legacy waste by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Following interventions by Saxena, the average monthly waste disposal rate increased from 1.4 lakh mt between October 2019 and May 2022 to an impressive average of 6 lakh mt per month from June to December 2022.

Furthermore, introducing integrated tenders for biomining, transportation, and disposal facilitated the disposal of approximately 7.5 lakh mt of waste each month, with a daily average of 25,000 mt at the three legacy waste sites in Bhalswa, Ghazipur, and Okhla.
The installation of GPS devices in waste collection vehicles will enable efficient monitoring and management of waste disposal activities, leading to improved waste management practices in Delhi’s west zone and Dwarka areas.
