Varsha Gaikwad Launches Appeal to Save Bandra Talao

Congress MP from Bandra, Varsha Gaikwad, has called for urgent intervention from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to address the deteriorating condition of Bandra Talao, a Grade II Heritage site located in the heart of the city. Gaikwad wrote a letter to BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani, urging immediate action to restore the lake, which has become a symbol of neglect and decay over the years.

In her letter, Gaikwad highlighted the alarming state of the lake, once known for its serene atmosphere and community engagement. The lake, which has been a focal point for local residents and visitors, is now overwhelmed by plastic waste, algae, and a lack of maintenance. The MP emphasised that this issue goes beyond aesthetics or leisure; it is crucial to the preservation of local culture and heritage. “The lake needs immediate cleaning to protect its significance, as it plays a vital role in the community’s pride and history,” Gaikwad stated. Her call for action has received widespread support from Mumbaikars, especially the residents of Bandra. They have launched an online campaign, “Initiating Change #SaveBandraTalao,” to raise awareness about the situation and urge the authorities to take action.

Zindaan Castellino, a 16-year-old environmental activist from Bandra, voiced his concern, saying, “Bandra Talao is a Grade II Heritage site and deserves better. The Nutan Nagar side of the lake faces constant dumping, and there’s a lack of enforcement of fines. It’s disheartening to see the lake in such a ruined state, with garbage and a foul smell overshadowing its beauty.” He added that in many countries, such heritage waterbodies are carefully maintained, and the community takes pride in preserving them. Community activists also pointed out that the lake’s walkway has been misused by drug addicts, further compounding the challenges of maintaining the site. However, they have welcomed the “Save Bandra Talao” initiative, appreciating the MP’s commitment to restoring the heritage lake.

Bandra Talao, which spans around 7.5 acres and is over 200 years old, has historically been a vital part of Bandra’s cultural landscape. Also known as the Swami Vivekanand Talao, or the Lotus Tank, the lake’s upkeep falls under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation. Given its historical and cultural significance, the lake deserves to be treated with the utmost care and attention. With MP Gaikwad’s intervention and the growing support from local citizens, the call for the preservation of Bandra Talao has garnered momentum. The ongoing efforts to restore the lake and protect it for future generations are vital steps towards preserving one of Mumbai’s treasured heritage sites.
