11 Critical Water Projects Fast-Tracked in Mumbai

Mumbai is set to witness a significant improvement in its water supply infrastructure as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a plan to expedite 11 pending water projects in the city. During a high-level meeting on Monday, chaired by the Chief Minister and attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reviewed the growing water demand of the rapidly expanding Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The meeting focused on addressing the escalating challenges posed by the city’s burgeoning population. CM Fadnavis directed officials to ensure the completion of these water supply projects within the next three years, a move aimed at mitigating future water scarcity in one of India’s most vital urban centres. Fadnavis emphasised the importance of resolving bottlenecks such as pending land acquisitions, delayed approvals, and other regulatory hurdles. Speaking after the meeting, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerate these projects, ensuring a robust and sustainable water supply system for the MMR. “Necessary permissions and other obstacles will be resolved swiftly to meet the three-year timeline,” Shinde stated.

Mumbai’s water supply system has long been under strain, with the growing population and increasing urbanisation putting added pressure on existing infrastructure. The completion of these 11 projects is expected to bolster the city’s capacity to meet future demand while enhancing the quality of services. This initiative reflects a strategic push by the Maharashtra government to prioritise urban infrastructure development, underscoring the importance of sustainable planning in addressing the city’s pressing needs.
