In a bid to manage traffic congestion on January 31, the Tambaram City Police Commissioner has announced significant traffic restrictions in Chennai, in light of high-profile events in the city. The day will see the wedding ceremony of a family member of former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu in Mamallapuram, as well as the scheduled visits of current Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These events are expected to attract significant attention, necessitating changes to the city’s regular traffic patterns.

As part of the arrangements, commuters in Chennai are advised to take note of several key diversions and route alterations. Vehicles travelling from Sholinganallur to Akkarai will be diverted at the Sholinganallur junction and rerouted via the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). Similarly, those coming from Mahabalipuram to East Coast Road (ECR) will be redirected at Kovalam junction via Kelambakkam. Motorists approaching OMR from Tiruporur will also be diverted at Kelambakkam junction. Furthermore, vehicles headed for Chennai Airport will be advised to take OMR, GST Road, or the Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road as alternatives to avoid congestion on the ECR.

Heavy Vehicle Restrictions and Diverted Routes

To ensure smoother traffic flow, specific restrictions will be placed on heavy vehicles during the critical hours of the day. From 2 pm to 11:30 pm, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from using the OMR, ECR, and 200 Feet Radial Road. The restrictions aim to ease traffic bottlenecks, particularly in areas around the VIP events and wedding, where road usage is expected to be high. These measures also highlight the city’s ongoing struggle with managing high volumes of traffic, especially when major dignitaries visit. Motorists planning to travel on these routes are urged to avoid ECR and 200 Feet Radial Road, and instead opt for OMR and GST Road, which are expected to experience less disruption during the event.

For those travelling from the Chennai Airport to ECR, an alternative route through OMR will be the most efficient option between 2 pm and 10 pm. The Chennai City Police are also keen to maintain commercial vehicle restrictions along the Airport–ECR route, ensuring that traffic flow remains unimpeded for regular commuters and those attending the high-profile events. The police department has urged the public to cooperate and follow these traffic arrangements to minimise inconvenience.
