40% of Bengaluru State Buses in Loss Govt Acts

Bengaluru’s public transport is in financial distress, with 40% of state-run buses operating at a loss. Over the last five years, transport corporations have accumulated losses exceeding ₹5,209 crore, compelling the government to intervene with financial aid.The sector has been severely impacted by rising fuel prices, salary hikes, and maintenance expenses. Despite these challenges, buses continue to run on unprofitable routes to ensure connectivity.

Officials confirm that while 40% of buses suffer losses, another 30% operate on a no-profit, no-loss basis. Only the remaining 30% of long-distance services generate revenue, making state intervention crucial. To mitigate the crisis, authorities have sanctioned a ₹2,000-crore loan to sustain transport operations. Additionally, ticket fares have been revised to offset rising costs. Meanwhile, financial assistance for the free bus travel scheme has reached ₹9,978 crore, with ₹7,796 crore already disbursed to transport corporations.

Bengaluru relies heavily on its bus network, making its financial sustainability a pressing concern. While mounting losses continue to pose a challenge, government-backed initiatives and strategic policy measures aim to keep public transport accessible and efficient. Balancing affordability with operational viability remains a key priority as policymakers navigate the future of Bengaluru’s transport system.
