Bengaluru’s burgeoning economic landscape has triggered a strategic move towards the development of a second airport, as confirmed by Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil.
A high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has recently concluded site inspections at three potential locations surrounding the city, marking a crucial step in addressing the region’s escalating aviation demands. The AAI’s forthcoming report, expected within a month, will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive feasibility study conducted by specialized airport infrastructure consultancy firms. The necessity for a second airport stems from the constraints imposed by existing aviation norms, which prohibit the development of new airports within a 150-kilometer radius of the operational Kempegowda International Airport until 2033. Minister Patil emphasized the urgency of initiating groundwork now, stating that delaying the process could push the realization of a second airport beyond 2040. He highlighted the critical role of passenger volume, cargo traffic, and surrounding industrial growth in determining the optimal location for the new facility.
The proposal has sparked interest and advocacy from various regional leaders. TB Jayachandra, Karnataka’s Special Representative in New Delhi, is championing the development of an airport near Sira in Tumakuru district. While acknowledging the feasibility of a district-level airport in the region, Minister Patil clarified that it would not qualify for international status. Similarly, BJP MLA Aravind Bellad has advocated for an airport serving North Karnataka. Patil reiterated the importance of comprehensive planning and procedural groundwork beyond mere land identification. Progress on existing airport projects is also underway. The Vijayapura airport is reportedly ready for inauguration, pending resolution of a Supreme Court case concerning environmental clearance. Minister Patil expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved within six months, paving the way for the airport’s inauguration.
Addressing recent controversies, Minister Patil responded to Chief Minister’s Economic Advisor Basavaraj Rayareddy’s claims of Karnataka topping the corruption chart, demanding that specific individuals responsible for corruption be named. He also reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to uplifting marginalized communities, including the poor, Dalits, women, and minorities, as highlighted during the recent party convention in Ahmedabad. The development of a second airport in Bengaluru is poised to significantly enhance the region’s connectivity and stimulate economic growth. The strategic planning and execution of this project will be crucial in ensuring that Karnataka’s aviation infrastructure remains robust and capable of meeting the demands of its rapidly expanding economy.
