Two New Metro Lines Approved in Pune

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to take on the execution of two new elevated metro corridors—connecting Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and Hadapsar to Saswad Road.

These corridors, recently greenlit by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), aim to address long-pending demands for improved public transport access in the rapidly growing eastern suburbs of the city. Both corridors are expected to enhance commuter connectivity, reduce vehicular load on arterial roads, and support the city’s broader objectives of green and inclusive urban infrastructure. According to officials, the PMC will facilitate land acquisition but will not shoulder the financial burden of construction, signalling a shift in project implementation strategy towards collaboration between municipal and regional development bodies. The growing footprint of metro infrastructure in Pune reflects the city’s push to decentralise transit accessibility and bridge gaps in last-mile connectivity.

With the population in Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road seeing a sharp uptick in recent years, particularly due to the spillover of urban residential and commercial projects, the new corridors are being seen as both a necessity and a long-term investment in environmental sustainability.Further strengthening the metro blueprint, the PMC has also approved the addition of a metro station on the Swargate-Katraj underground line. Responding to strong public demand, a fifth station will be established between Padmavati and Katraj at Balajinagar. While the land for this station is yet to be finalised, initial indications suggest it may come up near the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station. Importantly, the cost of the station will be borne entirely by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro), a move expected to speed up the approval and development timeline. This expansion underlines Pune’s increasing commitment to equitable and eco-conscious urban planning.

With vehicular congestion and carbon emissions becoming mounting concerns, the focus is steadily shifting towards mass transit solutions that are accessible, reliable, and environmentally friendly. The corridors also reflect a strategic intent to develop a more interconnected Pune Metropolitan Region, moving away from the traditional city-core model to a polycentric structure that distributes growth evenly. As more residents and businesses shift to the eastern fringes of Pune, these corridors will become crucial to maintaining urban efficiency and improving the quality of life. While the projects are still in the early stages, their alignment with Pune’s vision of a climate-resilient, pedestrian-friendly and public transport-led city marks a promising direction. With coordination between PMC, PMRDA, and Maha-Metro, the groundwork is being laid not just for infrastructure, but for a livable and sustainable urban future
