Jammu-Srinagar Highway Faces Extended Closure After Flash Floods

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a vital artery connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, remains closed for the third consecutive day due to extensive damage caused by flash floods and landslides in Ramban district.

The closure has left thousands of passengers stranded and disrupted essential supplies to the region.Engineers from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) report that the highway has been damaged at over 20 locations, with significant portions washed away by the floods. The debris has buried numerous vehicles, complicating rescue and restoration efforts. Authorities have indicated that it may take up to five more days to fully restore the highway to operational status.The flash floods, triggered by heavy rains, have also led to the collapse of several homes and inundation of residential areas in Jammu city and surrounding rural regions. Power and water supplies have been severely affected, and floodwaters have entered numerous homes and shops, causing widespread damage.

In response to the crisis, authorities have mobilized rescue teams and machinery to clear the debris and restore the highway. Stranded passengers are being provided with food and shelter, and medical teams have been deployed to assist those in need. However, the ongoing adverse weather conditions continue to hamper restoration efforts.While the Mughal Road, an alternative route connecting the southern Kashmir region with Jammu, remains open for light motor vehicles, it is not a viable option for the thousands of stranded passengers and heavy vehicles.

The closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway has led to increased demand for air travel, with passengers opting for flights to avoid the uncertainty of surface travel.
