Pune Railway Station, one of the busiest in Maharashtra, is undergoing significant upgrades to enhance passenger experience and accommodate increasing footfall.
The project encompasses the installation of new lifts, extension of platforms, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge, all aimed at improving accessibility and efficiency. In a move to enhance accessibility, two new lifts are set to become operational by January 2025. These lifts, located at platforms 1 and 6, will provide much-needed convenience for passengers, particularly the elderly and differently-abled. The installation of these lifts follows a survey conducted by the Pune railway division in 2022, leading to the approval and sanctioning of funds by the Railway Board. The remaining two lifts, planned for platforms 2-3 and 4-5, are expected to be operational within the next six months.
To accommodate longer trains and alleviate congestion, the station is set to receive two new platforms, bringing the total to eight. Additionally, four existing platforms are being extended to handle 24-coach trains. The yard remodeling project, estimated at Rs 300 crore, also includes the addition of two main lines to facilitate smoother freight train movement. This expansion aims to improve both passenger and freight operations, ensuring the station meets the growing demand. Addressing the needs of senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, the Railway authorities have approved the construction of a new 12-meter-wide pedestrian bridge. The existing 3.6-meter bridge will be demolished to make way for the new structure, which will include ramps and four lifts for improved accessibility. This initiative underscores the commitment to creating an inclusive and user-friendly environment at the station.
These upgrades align with broader goals of creating zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban spaces. By enhancing infrastructure and accessibility, Pune Railway Station is taking significant steps towards becoming a model of sustainable and inclusive urban development. The ongoing upgrades at Pune Railway Station signify a commitment to improving passenger experience and accommodating the city’s growing transportation needs. With the installation of new lifts, extension of platforms, and construction of a new pedestrian bridge, the station is poised to become a more efficient, accessible, and sustainable hub for commuters.
