Pune is set to enhance its public transportation network with the proposed extension of the metro line from Kharadi to Pune International Airport.
This development aims to provide seamless connectivity for commuters and reduce traffic congestion in the city The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been directed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this extension, which will integrate into the existing Khadakwasla–Swargate–Hadapsar–Kharadi metro corridor. The new route is expected to improve accessibility to the airport from various parts of the city.
Recognizing Kharadi’s rapid development as a commercial and residential hub, the proposal includes establishing the area as an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. This hub will facilitate connections between multiple metro lines, providing direct access to the airport from various routes, including Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, Nigdi to Swargate, and Shivajinagar to Kharadi. In addition to the airport connectivity, the proposed metro expansion includes a new route from Katraj to Hinjawadi. This corridor aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
To further address traffic issues, a double-decker flyover is proposed along the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk route. This infrastructure project is expected to facilitate smoother traffic movement while the metro line from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk is under development. The proposed metro extensions are part of a broader effort to enhance Pune’s public transportation system, making it more accessible and reducing reliance on private vehicles. These developments align with the city’s goals of creating a sustainable and efficient urban transport network.
As the Detailed Project Reports are prepared and plans are finalized, residents and commuters can look forward to improved connectivity and a more integrated transportation system in Pune.
